if guns are illegal then only people doing illegal activity will have guns. everyone having guns is much safer than only criminals having guns.
not to mention the fact that when a government takes away its people's ability to defend themselves, it gains much power. that is the reason for America's second amendment, the "right to bear arms", not for defending against criminals, but for keeping the government in check.
